GALLERY ANNOUNCES ART EXHIBIT TO BENEFIT SURFRIDER FOUNDATION
LAGUNA BEACH, CALIFORNIA – May 10, 2002 – How Original! An Art Gallery in Laguna Beach announces an art exhibit. “In the Toilet - An exhibition of function meets art,” to premier on June 1, 2002.
Says gallery owner and exhibit
curator Loretta Alvarado, “This
exhibit was conceived as I was staring at my toilet.
It had been placed on my front porch after
leaking all over the floor. As I stared at the poor forlorn
object, I thought why are they not made more beautiful?
They are made of porcelain after all and could be painted just like a
beautiful vase.”
Through a jury process, five area
artists were selected to paint on brand new toilets donated by Toto-USA, the
world’s largest toilet manufacturer. The
completed pieces will still be usable for the originally intended purpose. They will be displayed at the How Original! Gallery for the
entire month of June during which there will be a silent auction.
A portion of the proceeds from the auction will go to benefit the
Surfrider Foundation, a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and
enjoyment of the world's oceans, waves and beaches for all people, through
conservation, activism, research and education.
The
artists chosen to paint on these toilets are: Michael Sullivan of Whittier,
Carla Foster of Tustin, Keith Swecker of Laguna Beach, Randall Gunter of San
Diego, and Colleen Corbett of Laguna Beach.
In addition to the painted toilets, there will also be an exhibit of decorated toilet seats, and to continue the theme, “toilet paper.” These pieces of art will also be available for purchase and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Surfrider Foundation.
